Modester Makhungu

Kangemi, Kenya

Modester lives in the informal settlement of Kangemi, Nairobi where she works as a mentor to young girls. Modester took up embroidery in 2020 when she made a story for the Kenyan COVID Quilts which described the shortage of vaccines in Kenya. She followed up by making a lion for the Sister Artists 2 challenge, which was quilted by Hope Barton in Connecticut and auctioned. Modester says that embroidery helps her to socialize with other women and reduce stress. She now hopes it can generate an income and tells us that the money she has received from the embroidery project so far has enabled her to buy her first mattress. Modester is also active in the Kangemi Advocacy and Self Help Group, which formed in 2020 to organize embroidery training and launched a highly successful vaccination campaign in the settlement.
