Vena Moige

Kibera, Nairobi, Kenya

Vena lives with her husband and three children in the informal settlement of Kibera, Nairobi. Her first experience of embroidery came in 2020 when she made a block for the Kenyan COVID Quilts describing the closure of schools. Vena followed this up in 2021 with a crane for the Sister Artists 2 challenge, which was quilted by Dawn Piasta in Manitoba Canada and auctioned. Vena was accepted into college to study computers but unfortunately had to drop out because she could not pay for tuition. She picks up work when she can and is grateful for the small stipend she has earned so far from the embroidery project. Vena is an active member of Shield of Faith, the women’s association which was formed to facilitate embroidery training and now takes on broader social challenges in Kibera.
